Opus One began as a partnership of Robert Mondavi of Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux. It was the first premium wine in Napa Valley, with their first vintage in 1979, released in 1984 for $50/bottle (The 2021 current vintage is $455/bottle). Under the Opus One label, they make one single wine each year, which is a blend, which changes every year, of the 5 main Bordeaux grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec & Petit Verdot. Their production ranges from 23,000 to 38,000 cases per year, depending on the size of the grape crop in their estate vineyards each year. In 2020, they only harvested 10% of their grapes before the fires, so the 2020 vintage is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and has not been released to the public,
In 2004, as part of the sale of Robert Mondavi Winery, one-half of Opus One was sold to Constellation Brands. Today Opus One is 50% owned by the public company, Constellation Brands, and the other 50% still family owned by the Rothschilds. Opus One is currently sold in over 90 countries with approximately 60% of their wine is sold overseas and 40% within the US.
Visits to Opus One start with a tour of the impressive winery, including their barrel room, seen below, then finish with a seated tasting in or just outside their Founder’s Room. Each of the 3 wines is paired with a small bite from their chef.
